Everything you need to know before your stay at Cascade Apartment 4

Getting There

Snow chains are MANDATORY during ski season. You must carry a set of approved chains whenever driving to Mt Baw Baw during snow season — even if you have a 4WD. VicRoads and the resort can turn vehicles away without them.

If you don't own chains, you can hire a set from a number of locations on the way to the mountain. We recommend picking them up before you reach the mountain road.

Snow Chain Hire Locations Near Mt Baw Baw

Yarragon & Trafalgar ~50 km from the summit · Princes Highway Service stations along the Princes Highway in Yarragon and Trafalgar hire chains seasonally. These are the last major stops before you turn off toward Mt Baw Baw — fill up fuel and collect your chains here.
Warragul ~70 km from the summit · West Gippsland Warragul has auto parts stores (Repco, Supercheap Auto) and service stations that stock and hire chains. Larger selection and typically cheaper than last-minute options closer to the mountain.
Neerim South ~35 km from the summit · on the Icy Creek Rd route Local service stations in Neerim South area offer chain hire. A good option if you're approaching via the back road route.
Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort — Summit At the summit · last resort option The resort sells chains at the summit, but stock is limited and prices are higher. Don't rely on this as your plan A — you may be turned back on the mountain road before you reach the summit if you don't already have chains fitted.
Tips: Call ahead to confirm availability before you travel — hire stock goes fast on busy weekends. Make sure you know your tyre size (printed on the tyre sidewall, e.g. 235/65R17) so you hire the correct chain size. Practice fitting your chains at home before you leave — it's much harder in the cold and snow on the side of a mountain road.

For real-time road conditions and chain requirements, check VicRoads and the Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort website before you depart.

No. During ski season, private vehicles cannot drive into Baw Baw Village — you must park at Carpark 1 at the base of the village. The good news is that Cascade Apartment 4 is easy to access on foot from Carpark 1, so the walk to the apartment is short and straightforward.

Pack smart — separate your groceries from your gear so bags stay manageable for the walk.

Mt Baw Baw is approximately 130 km east of Melbourne CBD, but allow around 2.5 – 3 hours of drive time during ski season due to the winding mountain road and potential chain checks, traffic on busy weekends, and the lower speed limit once you leave the Princes Highway.

We recommend departing early on check-in day to arrive comfortably before the 4:00 PM check-in time. Avoid peak departure times on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings during school holidays.

A 4WD or AWD vehicle is strongly recommended, but not strictly required — provided you have approved snow chains fitted when the road requires them. 2WD vehicles with chains fitted correctly can typically make it up the mountain road.

That said, 4WD gives you significantly more confidence and safety on icy or snow-covered sections of the road, especially on the return trip. If you're driving a standard 2WD sedan, allow extra time and check conditions carefully before setting off.
